Tell us about your business – what service or product do you offer?
I’m a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist, Reiki practitioner and teacher, and Past Life Regression Therapist

How long has your business been running?
I started my reiki training back in 2007, and then finished my practitioner level in 2008, so I started seeing clients in that year, so it’s 18 years! However I’ve been self employed for 35 years now.

Why did you start up your business?
I was very unwell in my late 20’s, and when Western medicine ‘failed’ me somewhat I started to look into complimentary medicine. After a few years of working on myself, becoming really well and better than I ever had, I was offered to train in Reiki, which had been instrumental in my recovery. It became my goal to support anyone who wanted to seek another way to wellness- feeling good should be an empowering experience.

Tell us about a time you have taken a leap of faith
I’ve had many leaps of faith in business! I think it’s an important part of running one’s own business, self belief even when others say, oh that won’t work! The one that comes to mind is when I had a very bad injury in 2013, nearly losing my leg. As I sat there while I healed, I really took stock of what I wanted to do, but hadn’t yet and what I needed to change. I had put off training in hypnotherapy because I always said it was too expensive.. so in my convalescence I went for it- I couldn’t afford it, I didn’t know how I could attend, but I believed. And it unfolded in the most easy and accessible way simply because I changed my perspective. I found the best course available, and even offered by the head tutor to only pay for the course once I had qualified as he was sure I’d be busy with clients. I paid it off within a year of qualifying and always pleased that I trusted in the outcome.

How has your business changed since you began?
I think my business has changed quite a bit, with qualifications updated regularly and experience, but also I’ve relaxed into it a lot more. After years of renting therapy room space at Clarence House I now have my own treatment room in St Just, so I can work when I want to, accommodate clients at the times they are available and I’m proud of the space I can offer people on their healing journey.

What do you hope for your business in the future?
I hope to teach Reiki more often as it’s such a beautiful experience for everyone, and perhaps run a class or workshops more often for guided meditation, and past life group work too.

What benefits/challenges have you found as a business owner in the Far West of Cornwall
I think the benefits of working in West Cornwall are that word of mouth works very well- once people know what you do! My work is specialised so people come from a distance also, they enjoy coming to our area as well as coming for their sessions. I think the challenge can be keeping the service affordable when you live in an area which has lower income for a lot of people, while aiming to make a living- I do have a sliding scale where possible.

How has being a part of FWBN helped you?
FWBN has been inclusive and friendly, and very different from the starchy corporate style networking that’s normally on offer to businesses. It helps people to connect in general, not just over business and helps business owners to feel supported. I had the opportunity to give a short talk about what I do at one of the evening events.

Do you have any advice for people starting out?
My advice would be believe in yourself, whatever you believe you will achieve. Talk to people and do your research about what you might want to offer, and join FWBN!
